    Logging on locally using Vista

One of the things that has appeared with Vista in a domain is that the selection box that you woudl normally use to be able to log onto the machine locally is no longer appearing on the login screen.

So .. how do I log onto a Vista box that is joined onto the domain using a local acount?

If I wanted to logon with a local user account called Kyle I would type into the account name box:  .\kyle - this then logs on using a local account rather than a domain account.

    Virtual PC 2007 beta released

Overnight Microsoft released the public beta of Virtual PC2007. You can get it from Microsoft Connect.
(if you are not a member of connect .. you should be - there are some betas that require invites from product teams but the majority are open betas which give you an opportunity to test and influence upcoming MS products)

The benefits of Virtual PC 2007?.. firstly it runs on Vista (as a host) and also it supports Vista as a virtual machine. But don't think the benefit stops there.. the hardware virtualization has been updated and you can also still run it with XP as the host machine.

    ROI on BDD

I have been travelling around the country again with Microsoft presenting on Business Desktop Deployment.

One of the questions that regularly comes up in discussions is "How much is this going to cost?" and then following that is "How do I justify the expense/time?"

I was looking for some "facts" to back up my belief that the short term pain of getting BDD implemented was offset by the benefit long term and came across a Gartner study commisioned by Intel and Microsoft that has a few case studies based around the Gartner Total Value of Opportunity. Click Here to read it.

    Virtual PC issues..

This week I have been experiencing some issues with Virtual PC - basically crashing at random points.

I have been (and am still) a big fan of Virtual PC but this was really bugging me. The error that I was gettign would crash Virtual PC and report the following in Event Viewer:

The description for Event ID ( 1000 ) in Source ( Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: virtual pc.exe, 5.3.582.27, virtual pc.exe, 5.3.582.27, 0018c85a.

So - basically not a lot of assistance - I was speaking with Andrew Dudgell about it and he came up with a few suggestions.. all to do with the fact that I was running Virtual PC on a laptop. I did have hibernation turned on and that can cause troubles. Applied fixes and still no success.

Then further digging found a utility that was mentioned on the VirtualPC Guy's site. Basically what it does is turn off all the funky processor saving type functioning that processors seem to have nowadays. So - after having Virtual PC crash every couple of minutes - now it is working fine. So check it out if you are having the issues that I had. (oh.. and set it to Maximum Performance to ensure that there is no stepping taking effect that might cause you problems)

    Remote Desktops in Vista

There is a new feature in Windows Vista build 5456.. I use remote desktops a lot – to get to other clients, servers etc. There is a new switch off the mstsc command (the command line launch of the Remote Desktop client). Now there is a /span available- what does this do?.. it means you can have a multiple monitor Remote Desktop screen! Excellent….

    Correction to my profile

Thanks to Slade for pointing out .. I had my quote wrong.. whilst I had the spirit of the quote correct - the actual quote has now been corrected to "TRY?! NO! Do, or don't do. There is no try".

I think from memory Nick pointed it out ages ago as well.. but now it has been corrected!

Creating a Group Policy ADM template

Further to a question that got asked the other night and as a follow up to the Group Policy chat last SBS User Group meeting..

Below is an example of an ADM template that I used for the GP talks.. the layout is fairly standard – but once you create one.. the rest are easy!

The only “trick” as such is ensuring that you save it as a .adm file and that you remember you have to import it into any GPO that you want to use it in.

The premise behind using these things is that you can use it to create your own Group Policy Settings.. anything that can be changed in the registry you can change this way – you just need to know the key.

    Brisbane Innovations Talk

On Tuesday night I joined Jeff Alexander and Paul Woods from Microsoft Australia to present on Windows Vista and Office 2007. The group was made up of the SBS User Group and the Brisbane Infrastructure Group.

The idea was to present part of the Innovations 2006 tour that went to Sydney and Melbourne. Jeff presented on security in Vista, Paul did an overview of Office 2007 and I did a preso on Delpoying Windows Vista.

The slides from the night are on Jeff’s blog. http://blogs.technet.com/jeffa36/ The Deployment slide deck is currently available – the rest are coming soon he tells me!

The main thing that came out of the deployment presentation was that at the moment only about 25% of the audience had even considered having a managed environment – the thing with deployments is that there is a lot of short term pain for a massive long term gain. Use the tools that are available – things like Microsoft’s BDD tools (http://www.microsoft.com/deployment) is a great start to moving down the deployment path.

With a fully managed environment the first part is getting the desktops out there.. but then follow that up with a well planned out and organized Group Policy!

    Live from Boston TechEd

Wow.. 2 days into the show and the labs are rocking.. this year we have a new concept -  the “TLC” Technical Learning Centre – basically all the parts of the learning experience are gathered into one place, the Hands On Labs, the chalk-talk sessions and the product teams, all in one spot – and it is working really well.

We have 8 webcams up -  http://live.hynesite.biz is the place to find them. I generally will be in the Infrastructure Office making sure that everything keeps running fine.

We have 124 Labs on the floor and working well.. the feedback on the labs, the LaunchPad and the MCT’s have been fantastic!

    Video from HOL QA Week

Dick Carlson – a Microsoft Product manager who manages content and technical training delivery and who is our MS honcho for the labs has been working on a video of the QA process.. this is the first of those videos, he assures me that more are to come.

    TechEd US 2006 – Boston

Welcome to Boston – we are currently in the middle of setup for the Hands On Labs – with 115 labs and 8 MCT’s testing them to ensure that the content works and that the manuals are complete.

The setup for QA week went well, basically we arrived on Thursday morning and the setup of all the rooms and machines was complete by Saturday afternoon – we are at the Microsoft offices in Waltham (pronounced Wall-tham) on the outskirts of Boston.

The learning that we have done for previous shows means that things have gone smoothly (touching a wooden object so as not to curse ourselves!) and the meticulous planning has certainly helped in ensuring that everything and everybody is in the right place at the right time.

On a semi related note – I found today an interesting blog about TechEd - http://teched06.blogspot.com/2006/06/keynote-staging-sneak-peak.html about the Keynote - apart from the actual presenters that will be here there is a mention on the setup of the stage area – in there it is mentioned about the screens – basically to get the screens as bright as they do there is about 4 projectors that shine onto the same screen – but to make this work about 8-10 hours of effort is required to ensure that the projector images are all exactly lined up – cool huh?

Publishing Blog Entries from Word 2007 (beta 2)

I was looking around through Office 2007 last night and discovered the feature to be able to post directly from Office 2007 to the MSN Spaces (and yes – there is others that are available).

Which means that I am typing and publishing this from this from within Word 2007. Cool idea eh? If you are wanting to do the same – select new, Blog Entry from the Office menus – the first time you do that you will get an setup screen to configure – pretty straight forward and works well.

    TechEd US – Boston

Once again Spider Consulting will be attending TechEd USA – this year being held in Boston – the amount of planning for the Hands on Labs area this year has been amazing – we have been working on ideas, structure, deployments, etc since the close of business last year.

For me the best thing about TechEd is always the networking – the opportunity to meet, talk and interact with people in the industry – to be able to talk with Product Managers and of course the parties do break it up a bit.

This will be my 4th TechEd and I can honestly say that I have never had issues justifying my costs of attending – especially with the Australian TechEds- I have always got enough contacts and business out of attending to more than justify the costs.

    going to teched australia

If you are going to TechEd Australia in Sydney this year (and if you have never had the chance to before I would encourage it) then you have an opportunity to not only learn and network with others..

But in addition you have a chance to help me win stuff!

When you register - if you could mention that you were refered by Kyle Rosenthal (me) then it will mean that I am in the running to win a prize (a new promotion from MS Australia this year)

In addtion .. if you do go to TechEd - come and visit the Hands On Labs.. I will be updating with some of the offerings that we will have after TechEd Boston - the final list will be the "best of the Best" from Boston.

    Cheers

    Vista Infosessions

To all the people that attended the Vista infosessions in Brisbane.. thanks!

The feeback was great and it seemedlike a number of people learnt something about Vista - and maybe got a little more interested than maybe previously.

In the next couple of weeks I will be posting more details on the public beta (once it is released).

In the meantime I will be posting some useful links that might be of interest to further investigate Vista and its use for you.

    Vista details..

I recently had the opportunity to attend the Vista Airlift in Seattle.. basically an opportunity to further investigate the up and coming release of Windows Vista - the version we were looking at was 5270 - the December CTP.

A lot has been said about Vista and the change to CTP - basically it means that in the ramp up to the end product there is a lot of smaller releases to the beta test community.. so bearing that in mind -and the fact that it was all still in beta.. I liked it..

There have been a lot of cosmetic changes - changes to the desktop look and feel that will take a little to get used to. Things like Aero, integrated searching and the like.. they do improve the workability but as I said.. take a little to get used to.

From the back end though there has been great improvements - Group Policy, MMC, Firewall, Deployment - you name it there has been a thorough workover.

I will be filling out further details as I can - but I am eagerly awaiting the next release (Feb CTP) and will report back more after that .
